The Service Enriched Housing Program offers affordable housing for low to moderate income families who are committed to the goal of buying their first home within two years. The goals of the program are budget management, credit repair, the growth of a savings account, and eventually the purchase of the family’s first home. The program offers first-time home buyer classes, case management, credit repair plans, counseling, aftercare, and other support services. Rent is calculated at 30% of the family’s gross monthly income, and any amount paid over $500 is placed into an escrow account. The money saved in the escrow account is used to repair the family’s credit and then becomes a savings for the down payment on a home.

Audrey and her 12-year-old daughter, Danielle, came to the Service Enriched Housing program from Project S.A.F.E. With a desire to have a home for her family, Audrey went back to school, earning a Certified Nursing Assistant degree, and is now employed as a dental hygienist full time. She has opened an escrow account, and now that she is earning a competitive salary, she is able to put $250 a month in escrow. She will pay back her debt and after one year, she will be able to direct her monthly savings toward a down payment on a home of her own. She will be able to add her earnings from her tax return – after participating at the agency’s VITA site – and is taking several home buyers’ classes. Meanwhile, Danielle attends Project Grow after school and is thriving. |
